The project will be one of the largest infrastructure projects in Africa with an estimated total investment cost of approximately USD 4 billion. It is greenfield with optimized rail line and port design, expandable in phases to meet market needs.
A high-performance railway will be built to transport minerals, agricultural products and passengers between Moatize/Chitima region and the new port to be built at Macuse.
A new deep-water seaport will be built in accordance with International Maritime Standards to handle multi products including wood (chips, pulp, and paper), containerized agricultural products (tobacco, tea, nuts, fruits and edible oils), general cargoes as well as specialized cargoes (liquid). The port will have an initial capacity for two 80,000 DWT Panamax vessels with breakwaters to create a 14 km channel into the estuary.
